Benefits of Installing Solar Panels

Solar panels may come with a hefty price tag, but their seemingly endless benefits are worth the cost. Some of the strongest returns on investment include:

Saving Money

Using solar panels to capture the sun’s rays and generate electricity may seem costly. But installing a solar system in your home can reduce your overall utility costs by $1,500 a year, or roughly $25,000 to $30,000 throughout the life of your panels. Additionally, some states, including California offer tax rebates for solar panel installation.

Consistent Rates

Utility rates and fees are always on the rise. With solar you can rest easy knowing your energy won’t cost more and more every year. With your own solar panel installation you can become independent from the ever increasing costs associated with powering your home. Get a quote today to see just how much you can start saving!

Green Energy

Installing a solar system in your home is the future of personal sustainability. Renewable energy sources are becoming more and more popular, perhaps overriding the use of traditional energy generation in future generations. Being on the forefront of green energy can help you and your family live a more sustainable life.

Energy Independence

Not only does your energy generated via solar panel cost less, but it very well may be more reliable. The energy grids we are used to using can be vulnerable to overuse and black outs, leaving you and your family without power. Solar panels with batteries store the energy you generate, creating a surplus for when you need it most.

How You Save with Solar

Solar panels work by capturing the energy radiated from the sun, converting into electricity, and then storing it in batteries until it is needed. Installing solar panels offers you the opportunity to save on traditional electricity costs, as well as store your energy for periods of heavy usage or power grid outages.

Looking to Add Panels to an Existing System?

Recent policy updates have made it possible to add to your existing solar installation—without losing your NEM status! Act now to protect your current benefits, increase your energy production, and save more.

What to expect when installing solar panels

Installing solar panels is a relatively painless process when done correctly. That’s why the experienced team at Citadel Roofing and Solar are the ones to trust.

  1. To install solar, the installers first need to install the racking and mounting hardware onto your roof.
  2. Once the roof mounts are in place, the solar panels are then latched securely onto the beam matrix.
  3. The solar panels must then be wired properly to ensure they function safely and effectively.
  4. The solar panel system is then connected to an inverter. A device that converts solar energy into usable electricity.
  5. The inverter is connected directly to your home’s electrical distribution panel, or an optional battery which allows you to store excess energy for future use.
  6. Once city and local utility commissioning approval is obtained, the solar system is energized, powering your home with clean renewable energy.

Frequently Asked Solar Questions

Yes. California is one of the states with highest subsidies and tax incentives for switching to solar. Especially with the rising costs of electricity, opting for green energy can save you thousands.

Yes. California offers a variety of incentives from solar rebates and tax credits for switching to renewable energy. These include federal solar investment tax credits, local incentives, and solar property tax exemption.

The newest solar law in California is NEM 3.0, which comes from the Net Energy Metering (NEM) program. NEM 3.0 reduces the rate of electricity export for residential solar use by around 75%, to encourage the use of battery storage and electric vehicle charging technologies.

The size of the solar system is dependent on two main factors. The size of the property, and the amount of energy that is used. Consult with a professional to determine the right system to fit your energy needs.

Installing a solar energy system has been shown to raise resale value by $5,911 per kW of panels installed. It has been a major selling point that also helps homes sell faster compared to homes without them.

Yes, you can add panels to your existing system. However, how you do this can affect your NEM status. Small additions (up to 1 kW or 10% of your original system size) will not affect your NEM status. Larger expansions can be done using non-exporting panels to preserve your existing NEM status.

Exporting panels send energy to the grid and can earn you NEM credits. Non-exporting panels only produce energy for your home’s use and do not send energy to the grid.

This depends on your energy needs and goals. If you’re looking to increase your solar production for self-consumption (e.g., for a growing family or an EV), adding non-exporting panels can be beneficial while preserving your favorable NEM status.

How to Pay for Solar

Citadel’s Prepaid Solar Lease makes going solar more affordable by allowing homeowners to lease their system for about 70% of the cost of purchasing it outright. Because Citadel retains ownership of the equipment, we’re able to capture available incentives and pass those savings on to you. For homeowners looking for little to no upfront investment, a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) provides a no-upfront-cost solution with lower monthly energy expenses.

Whichever option you choose, there are flexible solutions designed to fit your energy needs and budget.

Solar Incentives

Residential solar energy systems pay for themselves over time, mainly through electric bill savings. Several programs and financing options can help speed up that return on investment:

  1. Net metering Earn credits for the excess solar energy your battery-backed system produces but doesn’t use to help lower your utility bills and shorten your payback period.
  2. Federal tax incentives  Depending on your project and tax situation, federal incentives may help reduce the overall cost of your solar installation.
  3. California rebate programs  Available rebates can help lower upfront costs, though programs vary by location and available funding.
  4. Flexible financing options  Spread out the upfront cost of your system with financing solutions designed to make solar more affordable from day one.

Because incentive programs and rebates change frequently, the best way to maximize savings is to review the options available for your location and system design.
